How to repair a cracked sink

Table of Contents

Like many other household appliances and fixtures, sinks can receive damage and cracks from repeated use. It may seem like a tall task having to deal with a cracked sink, but most of the time they can be repaired relatively easily instead of replacing the sink altogether. In this post, we will go over how you can repair the sink yourself instead of replacing the whole thing.

Your first step is to diagnose the severity of the crack in your sink. If it is a small crack and there seems to be nothing wrong with the structure of the sink, you should be good to just repair it. If the crack appears to be deep or the sink is leaking because of the crack, you should probably just get the sink replaced.

Next, you will need a sink repair kit, which you will be able to find at your local Lowe’s or Home Depot. After acquiring the repair kit, the first thing you will need to do is clean the sink thoroughly. Make sure there is no grime or dirt by using an all-purpose cleaner that you have around the house and dry it off with a towel.

The next thing you will want to do is sand the crack or damaged area. Using sandpaper, sand the affected area and make sure to do this until the crack has rough edges around it, as this will make it easier for the adhesive to hold. Be sure to only sand the crack, as you do not want to sand the unblemished area of your sink. After you sand the crack, you need to apply the Epoxy glue provided in the repair kit. Use a brush to apply the adhesive to the crack, and make sure to fill it up to the sink’s surface level. If you need to fill it more than once, make sure to let it dry before filling again and sand it down after each application of the adhesive. Once it is filled in completely, you just need to let it dry. For the most accurate results, make sure to follow the instructions on the repair kit.

The last thing you will need to do is apply touch-up paint. The waterproof paint will seal up the filling and hopefully allow you to put this problem behind you. Again, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how much to apply and how long to let it dry.

If you have a problem with your sink that is something other than repair, like a clogged drain or a pipe leak, this will require the help of a plumber.
